Peekaboo is the oldest game in the world. Long before rules, before scores, before words, there was a face disappearing behind two hands and coming back, and a baby laughing like the sun had been switched back on. PEEP is that game with the hands swapped for a bush, a rock, a flowerpot, a cloud and a log, and the face swapped for a rotating cast of small round someones who always, always want to be found.

Why it exists

The first version of this toy had a reveal and nobody behind it: a spot wiggled, a generic someone popped out, and that was the whole world. It was rebuilt to the shelf's depth standard, and what the rebuild added is the thing small children actually stay for: PEOPLE. Six named friends now live in the meadow, and each one leaves its own sign. A wiggling tuft of grass is Bun. Bubbles on the pond are Paddle. Soil piling up is Digs. A shaking branch is Pip. A flower that wobbles and is the wrong colour is Flutter, and a twitching tail by the log is Scrap.

The signs are a language

A child who cannot read learns, in a few minutes of play, that each sign means one particular friend. That is a real vocabulary, six words long, taught entirely by grass and bubbles, and using it is the game: see the sign, know who it is, call them out.

Everyone comes when called

Tap a friend's sign and they pop up, say their bubbly hello in their own voice, wave, and go off to hide somewhere new, so the game never runs out. Tap anything else and it answers too: flowers boing, the sun beams, clouds hurry, the log knocks, the pond ripples. Nothing in the meadow ignores a child, ever.

Meet all six and the meadow celebrates

A row of little portraits fills as each friend is met today. Complete it and everyone comes out at once for a party, confetti and all, and then the game gently begins again. Tomorrow the row starts fresh, because tomorrow deserves its own party.

The quiet parts

All the voices are made up on the spot by the browser itself, so nothing is recorded and nothing loads from anywhere. No ads, no tracking, nothing to buy, and nothing that needs an account. It is a meadow. Somebody is hiding in it.
